Description
Background	Procalcitonin (PCT) is a precursor peptide of calcitonin, which is a hormone-free glycoprotein with a relative molecular weight of 13KD and consists of 116 amino acids. The plasma PCT level in normal people is very low, usually <0.1ng/ml. However, in severe infection with systemic manifestations, the PCT level increases significantly. The increase of PCT reflects the continuous development from a healthy state to the most severe state of the disease (severe sepsis and septic shock). PCT detection can identify bacterial infection and evaluate the severity of infection. It is an important inflammatory marker to guide drug use and judge prognosis.
